Tonight's beer is from the Great White North. Vancouver, British Columbia to be exact. I was at my neighborhood market and saw they had three different products from Whistler Brewing Company. One was their Pale Ale, another was their Export Lager and the third was Original Black Tusk Ale. I flipped a three-sided coin in my head and chose the Original Black Tusk Ale.
Poured in a pint glass from the bottle.
It pours a very dark red, with just a little bit of light. The nose is chocolate. There is a head, but it quickly dissipates with no lacing. The mouth feel is too light. I guess it's conditioning, but I expect darker beers to be a bit fuller bodied.
The taste is chocolate and sweet, but not in a real good way. It tastes like you mixed chocolate powder in fizzy water, except that you only used one teaspoon of cocoa powder to 16 ounces of water. There's almost no carbonation to speak of. Just enough to make it finish like you are drinking mildly carbonated water.
According to their website, it is "A dark, bold English-style mild ale. Expect a mild bitterness with notes of chocolate and a roasted coffee finish."
The Chocolate, I get. The coffee, not so much. There is a hint of bitterness in there somewhere, but it is not a coffee bitterness, nor does it even seem to be from the hops.
I've had some really good Canadian Brews, but this one is a big disappointment. It's not a drain pour, but as close as I've come in a while.
